How to Explore

TATOR provides a curated data viewing experiences integrated with Schmidt Ocean Institute’s at-sea collection metadata.

Within the Expedition Explorer one can explore curated highlights based on data types within the system.

• The SOI Highlight data type provide at-sea reactions at recorded timestamps during the expedition. These are captured at sea.
• The Gemini Highlight data type up-converts an expeditions SOI Highlight by processing the frame through the Frame Explain AI-assisted annotation harness.

When we import expeditions into Tator, we process these data via Natural Language Processing to create logical clusters of similar content. These points in time, now grouped by some similarity are available for viewing as film strips in the Expedition Explorer.

The process provides a computationally efficient algorithm to summarize and provide an abbreviated view of the chosen Expedition.

Interface Features

• The datasets group comment fields on the selected data type.
• Some expeditions have other data types available as well, such as Biology Observation.
• Users can resize the film strip to maximize utility, utilizing both the scroll-wheel or click and drag to see all images within a group.
• While hovering over an image, dive information is displayed, but clicking reveals further detail in the sidebar.
• The sidebar contains navigation assistance to go to the annotator at that referenced point in a video.
